Here We Grow

Activities for Girl Scouts in Howard County

There is nothing quite like the energy of a Girl Scout troop on a mission. Recently, Here We Grow Stables Agriculture Learn Center had the absolute pleasure of hosting a local Daisy Troop, and let’s just say the farm has never felt more alive!

The girls visited us to check off the requirements for their Fun with Movement badge. By combining the best of mother nature with the rich traditions of global culture, we turned a sunny day at the farm into an unforgettable learning experience. If you are looking for engaging, hands-on Howard County Girl Scout badge activities, our farm is the perfect destination!

Here is a look at how these amazing Daisies earned their badge with us—and why your troop should be next.

Part 1: Getting Moving in the Garden 👩‍🌾

The first step to exploring movement? Getting outdoors, soaking up the sunshine, and putting those amazing bodies to work!

Before heading out, we geared the girls up like true farmers. We handed out adorable, pint-sized gardening gloves for each Daisy to keep and take home so they can keep their green thumbs active in their own backyards!

With their gloves on and a quick safety chat out of the way, the Daisies jumped headfirst into our learning garden. Together, we:

  • Dug and raked the soil to get it ready for planting.

  • Planted seeds carefully, practicing their fine motor skills.

  • Pulled weeds and tended to flowers, stretching and bending along the way.

While they worked, the girls got to breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun on their skin, and spot some of our favorite farm residents—birds, bugs, and butterflies! It was the perfect reminder of how fun (and active!) agriculture can be.

Part 2: Dance Around the World 💃

The Fun with Movement badge also encourages scouts to explore how different cultures use their bodies to celebrate, tell stories, and express joy. To honor this, we invited a special guest to the farm: a traditional Hindu dance instructor!

Showing Respect Through Culture: Girl Scout traditions emphasize learning directly from people within a culture to show respect and make the activity truly special.

After finishing their hard work cultivating and picking crops, the Daisies gathered for a dance lesson. Our instructor taught the girls a beautiful, traditional Hindu dance that historically celebrates the harvest.

The girls learned about the history of the steps, the meaning behind the expressive hand gestures, and the rhythm of the music. Watching the girls dance together surrounded by the very fields they had just tended to was pure magic.
